In 2002-2003, discussions with Eli and Edythe Broad, MIT, Harvard, the Harvard-affiliated hospitals and the Whitehead Institute defined the vision for a new institute, provided an institutional context for its founding, and gave shape to its mission and organization. The extraordinary generosity of Eli and Edythe Broad made it possible to launch the institute.
